Case Manager

International Rescue Committee - Case Manager

Scope:

The case manager will carry out activities in accordance with contractual requirements set by the Department of State and Department of Health and Human Services, as well as internal policies and procedures as defined by IRC headquarters. The case manager will work with a diverse group of newly arriving refugees in a multi cultural, fast-paced environment. This position plays a key role in facilitating the self-sufficiency process for refugees soon after their arrival in the United States.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct all pre-arrival activities in accordance with federal guidelines including verification of placement interviews and follow up with potential refugee anchors.
  • Conduct assessment and orientation for U.S.-based relatives.
  • Ensure housing set-up, utilities set up, furniture delivery and household goods acquisition prior to refugees’ arrival.
  • Greet refugees upon arrival at New York Airports.
  • Conduct initial intake, comprehensive cultural orientation and review entry documents for new refugee arrivals.
  • Develop comprehensive self-sufficiency plan, resettlement plan and individualized family budget.
  • Facilitate services and public benefits appointments and referrals as required including social security, food stamps and Medicaid.
  • Accompany refugees to medical, social services and other appointments. Provide or secure interpretation services as necessary.
  • Update Refugee Resettlement System (RRS), the US Program Department’s customized database, as required by federal grants and contractual obligations. Maintain complete, updated casefiles and financial documentation.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor and executive director.

Requirements:

  • College degree or comparable work experience required.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in decision making practices.
  • Ability to identify challenges and provide recommendations for solutions.
  • Ability to utilize the RRS as primary source for all service-related documentation.
  • Ability to work with multicultural caseload and ethnically diverse staff.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of benefits/welfare system in New York City preferred.
  • Strong organizational, time management and communication skills. Patience required.
  • Accuracy in data entry skills, organization and excellent attention to detail.
  • Second language (Burmese, Karen, Karenni, Arabic or Nepali) preferred.
  • Must be able to work under pressure and prescribed timelines.
