Centrum - Director of Development
As one of Washington's leading cultural institutions, Centrum has provided hundreds of thousands of people with life-changing experiences through workshops, performances, creative residencies and educational programs for nearly 40 years. Based at Fort Worden State Park in the Victorian Seaport and Arts Community of Port Townsend, Centrum and its partners have helped to transform this historic site, nestled in the bluffs of the Puget Sound, into a campus of creativity, engaging artists, audiences, and students of all ages.
Centrum is one of the nation's pioneers in presenting week-long workshops and weekend intensives in jazz, acoustic blues, and traditional folk arts for pre-professional and aspiring musicians in addition to hosting an annual writer's conference. Each summer, thousands of local residents and visitors from all over the Northwest come to Fort Worden and downtown Port Townsend to enjoy an array of outstanding performances and readings. Guest artists, who serve as faculty for the workshops, perform in intimate settings throughout Port Townsend and then join with ensembles from around the world for main stage performances at Wheeler Theater and McCurdy Pavilion at Fort Worden.
Centrum also provides working artists the refuge and resources needed to create and complete artistic projects. Artists from all over the country come to Fort Worden and stay in a Centrum cottage and utilize an array of amenities including a printmaking studio, recording studio, and other facilities or simply take inspiration from the breathtaking vistas of the Puget Sound and San Juan Islands to create their work. More than 1,000 artists have participated in Centrum residencies since 1974.
Sparking the artistic potential of young people through creative expression and exploration is at the core of Centrum's mission. Each year, students in grades 5 - 12 from schools throughout the state come to Fort Worden for an intensive week of music, dance, creative writing and theatrical arts. Joining with the Office of the Superintendent for Public Instruction, the Port Townsend Marine Science Center, and other partners, Centrum offers an unparalleled arts experience that greatly enhances the curriculum of elementary and secondary education.
