StoryCorps - Development Associate, Institutional Giving

The Development Associate, Institutional Giving supports the work of the Foundation and Corporate Relations Manager in managing the foundation and corporate fundraising area of StoryCorps' Development Department. Duties will include foundation research, donor cultivation, and the writing of letters of inquiry, proposals, and reports. The Development Associate, Institutional Giving reports to the Manager, Foundation and Corporate Relations and works closely with the Development Director, Program Director and Program Managers, and the Development team.

The Development Associate is a key staff member that will participate in all facets of the Institutional Giving program. As such, the Development Associate will be encouraged to develop an understanding of the entire organization and foster effective teamwork and communication with all staff members. The Development Associate reports to the Manager, Foundation and Corporate Relations, and may recruit and supervise an intern to support his/her functions.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Support and facilitate the functions of the Foundation and Corporate Relations Manager
  • Plan, revise, and strategize (annually and quarterly) upcoming proposals and reports by coordinating activities and executing agreed-upon plans, in partnership with the Foundations and Corporate Relations Manager
  • Conduct extensive research and report on prospective opportunities to approach foundations and corporations for funding of StoryCorps programs and specific projects
  • Collaborate with the Foundation and Corporate Relations Manager on the cultivation and stewardship of prospective institutional funders
  • Maintain institutional funders' portfolio, database, and other donor/gift tracking systems
  • Write and edit proposals, reports, presentations, and other materials as required
  • Gather, collate, review, edit, and finalize grant proposals submitted on behalf of StoryCorps, in advance of submission to foundations, corporations, and other prospective funders
  • Organize supplemental documentation (i.e. budgets, timelines, pictures, CD's, etc.) as needed and requested for specific grant proposals, reports, annual appeals, and sponsorship solicitation
  • Work with program staff to collect, organize, and share information for accurate grant reporting to funders (government and institutional)
  • Ensure timely reporting on all grant deliverables by managing reporting schedule
  • Maintain necessary records, files, reports, databases, and resource materials pertinent to grant activities
  • Develop and prepare internal reports as needed
  • Manage the Institutional Giving Calendar
  • Perform additional tasks to support the Institutional Giving sector and the Development Department as a whole, as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • 2-3 years demonstrated experience in Development/Fundraising, with extensive knowledge of Institutional Giving
  • Experience writing grants and funding proposals, with a proven track record of success
  • Proven ability to organize, expedite, and manage multiple complex projects simultaneously, working within and across diverse groups and teams
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; particularly strong writing/editing ability is required
  • Strong research skills and knowledge of fundraising information sources
  • Excellent computer skills: proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel is required; experience with fundraising databases is preferred
  • Extraordinary attention to detail and analytical abilities
  • Strong time-management skills and ability to work efficiently and effectively in a deadline-driven, fast-paced environment
  • Must be a proactive and creative problem-solver; adaptive to a growing, changing organization
  • Strong collaborative and teamwork skills, as well as the ability to work independently
  • Flexibility, resourcefulness, and sense of humor
