Director of Institutional Advancement, National Academy Museum and School of Fine Arts

Overview: The National Academy is a 184-year-old honorary association of artists and architects, a museum of American art, and an art school. Founded in 1825 and modeled after the Royal Academy of Arts in London, the National Academy was established for the purpose of education and exhibition, and is committed to the promotion of American art and artists. The Academy's collection of over 7,000 nineteenth century, twentieth century, and contemporary works form a veritable survey of American art. The National Academy is located on prestigious Museum Mile in the Carnegie Hill district.

Position Summary: The National Academy's Director of Institutional Advancement is responsible for oversight of all aspects of the Academy's fundraising. He or she will work closely with the Academy's Director and Board Development Committee to set and achieve goals. Reports to the Director of the National Academy Museum and School of Fine Arts.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversees the Academy's fundraising efforts (major giving, annual fund, institutional and planned giving, and special events) to include prospect research, cultivation, solicitation, facilitation, and stewardship.
  • Proactively manages and facilitates the fundraising volunteers and the Development Committee and communicates regularly with them regarding the Academy's funding needs and programs.
  • Proactively manages and facilitates the Nominating Committee to identify prospective Board and committee members.
  • Supports the director and the Board providing research, training, and general facilitation for all fundraising efforts. Participates in solicitations as necessary.
  • Initiates and manages a planned giving program.
  • Manages membership campaigns. Oversees acquisition and renewal of members at all levels.
  • Tracks and regularly reports on fund raising results to the Director and to the Development Committee.
  • Works with the Director of Communications to achieve marketing and public relations goals and to ensure the image of the National Academy.
  • Manages a staff of four professionals: Special Events Manager, Individual Giving Manager, Institutional Giving Manager, and Development Assistant.

Attributes and Qualifications:

  • Proven track record of successfully managing fundraising efforts and at least five years professional experience. Major gift experience a plus.
  • Proactive and detailed oriented.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills and a proven ability to work closely with all constituents and colleagues.
  • Proven management skills.
  • Organized self-starter with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledgeable of fundraising software and database management.
  • Minimum attainment of a bachelor degree.
  • Knowledge of, or background in, the arts a plus.

Salary: Negotiable.
