Vice President of Development and Communications

New York Academy of Medicine
New York, New York

New York Academy of Medicine - Vice President of Development and Communications The New York Academy of Medicine (NYAM), founded in 1847, is a unique health focused nonprofit committed to promoting the health of people in cities through innovative interdisciplinary approaches to policy advocacy, research, evaluation, education and community engagement. Throughout its history it has tackled critical urban health problems in New York City from its early role in child health, nutrition and immunization, to establishing the NYC Board of Health, and conducting landmark studies to promote action on issues like: maternal mortality, vaccine availability, substance abuse, HIV/AIDS and post-traumatic stress syndrome in children after 9/11.

In addition the Academy draws on the expertise of its 2000 Fellows, health professions and experts locally and worldwide, to promote change in the environments in which people live, work, learn and play. To make the healthy choice an easy choice NYAM ensures that the solutions can be implemented and sustained by working with a wide range of governmental and non-governmental partners for the adoption of evidence-based health policies at local, state and national levels of government.

The Position:

Over the past three years, NYAM has brought on a strong staff in both development and communications, created an active Development Committee of its Board, clarified its messaging on its priority programs, and increased its visibility locally, nationally, and internationally. NYAM is now seeking to hire a Vice President of Development and Communications (“VP”) to continue to expand its public profile and foster the further dynamic growth of its fundraising programs. The VP, reporting directly to the President, will join a collaborative senior management team and work closely with members of the Board of Trustees and its Development Committee. The VP will be a leader and provide vision, strategic direction and entrepreneurial management for a staff of 11 development and communications professionals.

The VP will be expected to significantly plan and direct a wide range of fund development strategies including major gifts, annual fund and planned giving and will play a major role in identifying, cultivating and soliciting major donors, creating appropriate special events, and growing the corporate and foundation funding base. While the organization’s significant capacity for government and foundation funding is well established, the VP will support program staff efforts in identifying new competitive funding opportunities. The VP will develop and supervise marketing and communication efforts, including the use of social media, to increase the visibility and understanding of the work and mission of the NYAM.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the President, Senior Management and Board of Directors to grow NYAM’s development program.
  • Plan and direct fundraising activities, including a capital campaign to build endowment and secure funding for NYAM strategic priorities and the NYAM Library’s new Center for the History of Medicine and Public Health.
  • Lead a fundraising team to solicit and secure funds and resources via major gifts, corporation appeals, annual fund, planned giving and special events.
  • Develop and supervise marketing and communication efforts to enhance NYAM’s standing among peer institutions and gain recognition in the local, national and global communities.
  • Oversee the continued enhancement and full functional use of NYAM’s website and related data base management.
  • Manage the Development and Communications teams to ensure effective teamwork within and productive relationships with other NYAM divisions and departments.
  • Supervise the planning and monitoring of the budget to maximize resources using best practices in the field.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree from an accredited school or equivalent education/experience.
  • Minimum of ten years of professional experience with proven success in fundraising and knowledge of development strategies within a comprehensive program.
  • Effective leadership skills with experience in successfully directing others to promote an open, inclusive environment that emphasizes cooperation and teamwork.
  • Ability to implement and oversee the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of both private and public funders.
  • Demonstrated expertise in marketing and communications, with both traditional and new media.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Intellectual curiosity about the public health issues affecting urban populations and a commitment to the organization’s mission.
