Director of Donor Relations, Westside Family Health Center

WESTSIDE FAMILY HEALTH CENTER (the Center) is a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to provide comprehensive, high quality, cost effective health care in an educational and supportive environment that empowers patients to take an assertive role in caring for their well-being through all stages of life.

THE OPPORTUNITY: The Director of Donor Relations is responsible for strategic fund development planning, analysis, execution and evaluation, annual and major donor cultivation, stewardship and communications, special events, Board relations, and launching a multi-year capital campaign. Working in collaboration with the Director of Institutional Relations, s/he will meet fundraising goals and develop synergistic external relationships. S/he will ensure a positive image is maintained within the community and that this image is supportive of the agency's overall development and financial growth. The Director of Donor Relations is an integral member of the senior management team, participating in major policy decisions. S/he will report to the President/CEO.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Planning and Strategy:

  • Work with the Director of Institutional Relations to establish and execute a multi-year fund development plan that is in alignment with the organizational strategic plan and supports the Center's general operations, programs, and capital campaign. The diversified fundraising plan will include goals and strategies for: major donors, individuals, local and regional foundations, corporations, and government grants and contracts.
  • Meet regularly with the Director of Clinical Services and Director of Community Outreach & Education to review program data, and identify key donor prospects, and review the status of various income and fundraising programs as they relate to programs.
  • Build strong connections between the President/CEO and key donors. Prepare and direct solicitation meetings, including providing cultivation plans that contain prospect research, talking points and assistance with data management, and follow up.

Major Donor Program:

  • Drive the strategy and direction for the major donor effort ensuring high-quality donor stewardship.
  • Cultivate and solicit major donors and steward the relationships for increased meaning and outcomes.
  • Support the Board volunteer leadership in maximizing their networks and involvement in major gift cultivation and solicitation.

Annual Giving Program:

  • Drive the strategy and direction for the annual giving effort ensuring high-quality donor stewardship.

Campaign Director:

  • Design, implement, and continually track the progress of the multi-year capital campaign, as directed by the President/CEO.
  • Manage the day-to-day activities of the campaign.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Institutional Relations to identify, cultivate, and solicit major campaign gifts from individuals, foundations, and corporations.
  • Work closely with the President/CEO to develop the Campaign Leadership Committee of the Board of Directors.

Board Relations:

  • Organize, strategize with, and support the Board's development efforts.
  • Work closely with Board leadership to track each member's annual personal financial gift and fundraising contribution to the organization.
  • Support the Development Committee in providing fundraising training to members and in the overall coordination and follow-through of board prospects and leads.

External Relations and Donor Communications:

  • Develop and implement a coordinated donor communications plan which includes donor acknowledgement, a donor newsletter, website, annual report, and other collateral materials.
  • Serve as a public representative and spokesperson for the Center at engagements with major donors and prospects, local and regional foundations, corporations, community partners, and general public events.

Special Events:

  • Oversee the Center's annual Gala, including creating and leading a host committee, driving ticket sales, developing the program and auction, and coordinating special events consultants, ensuring at least a 50% net return.
  • Work with the Director of Institutional Relations, who is responsible for corporate sponsorships, corporate table sales, and tie-ins, to expand corporate support for the Center.

Management:

  • Supervise and maintain the accuracy, quality, and currency of donor information management.
  • Provide professional leadership to the development team. This includes regular supervision, goal setting, providing professional development opportunities, training, and mentoring when needed.
  • Inspire and develop a mutually supportive team environment. Foster collaborative relationships across all departments. Create buy-in and synergy that supports fundraising success and community investment.
  • Hire, supervise, and provide training and assistance to staff, consultants, and volunteers regarding the Center's fund development function.
  • Develop and oversee implementation of the departmental budget and work plans.
  • Carry out other responsibilities as assigned and required by the President/CEO.

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Commitment to Westside Family Health Center's mission, vision, and values.
  • Leadership qualities are a primary requisite — must be able to conceive, plan, and lead the execution of the development program.
  • 7 years of professional nonprofit work experience with evidence of progressively responsible positions.
  • 5-plus years of management and fundraising experience with high profile constituents, foundations, and Board members.
  • Thorough knowledge of theories and effective practices in donor acquisition and stewardship, personal solicitation, major donor programs, direct mail, e-philanthropy, planned giving, event management, grantsmanship, and public relations practices and techniques.
  • Capital campaign planning/prospecting/execution or significant major gifts experience required.
  • Evidence of experience in securing gifts.
  • Exemplary oral and written communication skills.
  • Creative and effective manager, leader, and supervisor.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills; responsive and good at follow-through.
  • Results oriented, energetic, and able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency with MS Office and donor management systems.
  • Bachelor's degree required; master's degree preferred.
  • Valid California driver's license.
