The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (AWLA) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit which serves the City of Alexandria as well as the Washington, DC metropolitan area. The Executive Director/CEO will be accountable for developing and implementing strategy to further the organization’s mission. The AWLA operates an open-admission private shelter with high adoption/low euthanasia rate.
The Executive Director/CEO will serve as the public face of the AWLA and will be responsible for overseeing the AWLA’s humane education, adoption programs, community outreach, animal control obligations, and managing a staff of 40+ employees.
Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to animal welfare and have strong leadership skills. A background in strategic planning, fundraising, staff management, budget development, and community relations is necessary. They must also be able to work effectively with staff, volunteers, government and nonprofit partners, as well as the public.
A bachelor’s degree and seven or more years of experience in animal welfare, preferably shelter management is required. Salary could go as high as $130,000 per year, depending on the candidate’s experience and ability.
