Grantmakers In Health (GIH), a premier affinity group in health philanthropy, seeks an accomplished strategic leader with expansive knowledge of key issues in health and health care, public policy, and the practice of philanthropy to help foundations and corporate giving programs improve the health of all people. Committed to evidence-based practice and work that promotes collegial discussion, learning, questioning, and lively debate within the field, GIH facilitates innovation and collaboration at a watershed moment as the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors inform and respond to major changes in health and social policy. The President and CEO transition at GIH presents an exceptional opportunity for a dynamic, entrepreneurial executive and strategist to envision and build a greater future on GIH’s already outstanding record of strengthening the grantmaking community’s skills, networks, and spheres of influence.
The President and CEO must be able to champion and represent GIH as a leader in the field of health, health philanthropy, and public policy, helping to connect policy and practice with an eye toward the particular roles that grantmakers can play. S/he has the opportunity to steward an organization with a tremendously talented and committed staff, a diverse and highly-engaged board, and a peerless reputation for quality in the field. S/he will have the ability to translate a grand vision for GIH into concrete and measurable outcomes and to create the necessary infrastructure and funder relationships in order to maximize GIH’s impact and responsiveness to leading-edge developments in health policy and philanthropy. Specifically, s/he will nurture GIH’s existing culture of respect, high quality standards, and fiscal stability and transparency; recruit, retain and develop a skilled, diverse and motivated staff; increase Funding Partner support and operating revenu
e; and build external visibility with funders, partners, policy leaders at the federal, state and local level, media and other constituents.
This position calls for an entrepreneurial, proactive, charismatic and nimble leader who possesses both the vision to inspire and the skills to lead an organization into its next phase of growth and advancement. Combining a personal commitment to professional excellence with exceptional communication skills, the ideal candidate will have a minimum of ten years of senior leadership experience serving the fields of health, public policy and philanthropy; demonstrated financial and staff management experience; a strategic approach to fundraising, through both direct solicitation and building new constituencies; and an ability to generate new revenue streams and envision the next phase of GIH’s growth and development, building on its broad and inclusive base of Funding Partners.
