Lawyers Alliance for New York - Associate Director of Development

Lawyers Alliance for New York, www.lawyersalliance.org, is the leading provider of business and transactional legal services to nonprofit organizations that are improving quality of life in New York City neighborhoods. Our clients develop affordable housing, stimulate economic development, promote community arts, and operate and advocate for vital programs for children and young people, the elderly, and other low-income New Yorkers.

We seek an experienced development professional to play a significant role in our development operation, taking on increasing responsibility and ownership during an anticipated period of growth for our organization. This position reports to our Deputy Executive Director/Director of Institutional Advancement.

Responsibilities of the Associate Director of Development include:

  • Working with the Director of Institutional Advancement and directly with the Development Committee of Lawyers Alliance’s Board to prepare and implement an annual fundraising plan to achieve annual budgeted goals for contributed revenues from foundations, law firms, banks, corporations, individuals, and special events.
  • Researching, identifying, and helping seek new sources of philanthropic support, with an emphasis on increasing contributed revenues from private foundations to support legal and educational services in Lawyers Alliance’s program priority areas and special initiatives as well as for general operating support; work with the Director of Institutional Advancement to cultivate foundation funder relationships.
  • Collecting information for, writing, preparing and distributing compelling letters of inquiry, grant proposals, fundraising appeal letters, and reports; working with the Director of Institutional Advancement, staff attorneys, and program staff to articulate a persuasive vision of Lawyers Alliance’s work and its impact on nonprofit organizations serving low-income New Yorkers.
  • Assisting in the development and successful staging of the annual Business Law & Leadership Gala, including planning, sponsor recruitment, invitations, program, and managing event logistics event program; working with the Director of Institutional Advancement and Senior Development Coordinator to insure a successful event attended by leaders from the legal and business communities.
  • Working with the Director of Institutional Advancement to provide helpful information to members of the Board of Directors about their individual and institutional activities related to Lawyers Alliance, and researching and preparing information about and for prospective and current Board members to support Lawyers Alliance’s Board development efforts.
  • Assisting the Director of Institutional Advancement in coordinating the activities of the Board of Advisors, consisting of former members of the Board of Directors and other senior lawyers who support Lawyers Alliance’s work.
  • Assisting in the preparation and distribution of agendas, minutes, and materials for meetings of the Board Development Committee, Board of Directors, Board of Advisors, and Associates Advisory Board.
  • Assisting in planning for the successful celebration of Lawyers Alliance’s 45th and 50th anniversaries, helping to design a plan to maximize the development potential of those milestone celebrations in 2014 and 2019 respectively.
  • Working with the Marketing Manager to communicate compelling messages to current and potential financial supporters in the legal, business, and nonprofit sectors about Lawyers Alliance’s programmatic and financial achievements.
  • Managing a calendar of fundraising inquiries, proposals and reports, researching, monitoring and meeting deadlines to maximize the efficiency and results of Lawyers Alliance’s development operation.
  • Assisting in the preparation of the annual operating budget, periodic financial reports, cash flow reports, and annual audit as they pertain to contributed revenue received and projected by Lawyers Alliance.
  • Maintaining and updating a database and other records of development information, working with the Senior Development Coordinator and Director of Finance to insure that this information is consistent with Lawyers Alliance’s accounting system.
  • Supporting additional development activities, including the annual law firm appeal and annual individual appeal, as well as Lawyers Alliance’s programmatic, marketing and administrative activities, as requested.

Lawyers Alliance offers a collegial work environment, generous benefits, and a chance to be involved in interesting public interest work. Qualifications include a B.A. degree plus at least six years of relevant development experience, including substantial experience with private foundation fundraising. Familiarity with special event fundraising and the legal sector is a plus. The ideal candidate will be organized, able to work with multiple constituencies, adept at working with a relational database, and be excellent at multi-tasking and coordinating with a variety of people, messages, and audiences.
