The Manager of Member Programs is a full-time exempt member of the Development team reporting to the Vice President of Membership and Development. The manager is responsible for planning and implementing annual fund goals; organizing member, prospect and Society events; providing tours to members and the public; working with USCHS staff to implement strategies that serve the membership and the Society’s mission; contributing to the supervision of the Development Coordinator; and ensuring the accuracy of development database and finance records.
Applicants should be creative, outgoing, and with an ability to work collaboratively with many varied programs and individuals. S/he should have a strong ability to communicate effectively and persuasively, orally and in writing, the organization’s mission. The ability to develop comfortable relationships with donors is essential; ability to see the big picture is critical; knowledge of and/or interest in Congress, politics and history are a plus.
Responsibilities:
- Prepares short and long-term plans and timelines for strategies related to building value of membership program.

Coordinates, plans and implements benefit strategies, cultivation activities and retention, upgrade and acquisition programs and promotions. Takes the lead in organizing special events in fulfillment of membership benefits and to attract new members. Assists in organizing USCHS events, working with Development staff, volunteers and other departments. Develops and implements new member programs and recruitment strategies, such as lectures and special tours, working with development, history and marketing staff.

Develops annual membership operating budget and monitors income and expenses monthly; prepares monthly report of development income for reconciliation with Finance.

Develops and implements individual donor mailings and appeal materials, including but not restricted to monthly renewals and lapsed donor mailings, prospect mailings, special gift solicitations, annual direct mail solicitation, year-end mailing, invitations, and gift acknowledgments. Drafts all correspondence, general proposals, announcements and other materials for membership/donor acquisition, retention and acknowledgment; personalizes correspondence where appropriate.

Works with volunteers, donors and board members as necessary to cultivate memberships and increase membership in the annual campaign, Capitol Alumni and major donor programs. Identifies prospects and mailing lists for annual membership campaigns, and works with other similar non-profit organizations on list exchanges and cooperative programs.

Plans and attends all membership events and coordinates membership representation (volunteers and development staff as needed) at all educational events. Recruits and trains volunteers to assist with member activities and programs, including representation at Combined Federal Campaign promotions in the fall and early winter.

Conducts tours of the Capitol for donors, prospects, related organizations and the public as needed. Tours may include early mornings, evenings, and weekends, with compensating time off.

Enhances text and timeliness of web content for all areas of development, including interactive elements, project/event announcements and follow-up, consistency of style and look. Works with development and history department staff, and with USCHS’s web designer, to accomplish these ongoing updates.

Extends the visibility of the Society by engaging members and prospective members through postings on Facebook and other social network sites as appropriate. Contributes to topic selection and drafts copy for print and email newsletters and web site.

Assists in creating promotional materials for solicitations, invitations, etc.; and works with outside vendors on production of print pieces, premiums, and other items as needed.

Supervises Development Coordinator in the processing and acknowledgment of memberships and donation; in pulling lists for invitations, email blasts, exchanges, etc.; and in enhancing and ensuring the integrity of the donor database and computer system. Oversees the preparation of and ensures the accuracy of a variety of donor and prospect lists and contribution/member reports to support development programs. Reviews documentation and processes for opportunities to improve efficiency and effectiveness; and utilizes database to analyze donor/member patterns and tests approaches to maximize effectiveness.

Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements: Excellent computer/database skills, including Word, Excel and web technology; knowledge of Raiser’s Edge a plus. Well organized, attention to detail and broad picture essential. Ability to work well independently and creatively in a team setting. Working knowledge of fundraising principles; excellent oral, written and interpersonal communications skills; ability to manage multiple tasks. Bachelor’s degree and 2 years development/administrative experience.
Schedule: 40 hours per week, 9am to 5pm. Some evening work required for events and tours.
The U.S. Capitol Historical Society is an independent, nonpartisan, 501(c)(3) organization founded in 1962 with a Charter from Congress to educate the public about the U.S. Capitol and Congress. In addition to developing diverse community, visitor and school programs on the history of the Capitol and the Congress, the Society contributes to the research and display collections of the Capitol.
