AFS-USA - Development Coordinator

About AFS-USA:

AFS-USA works towards a more just and peaceful world by providing international and intercultural learning experiences to individuals, families, schools, and communities through a global volunteer partnership. AFS-USA partners with over 50 other countries in the international AFS network, which has provided international exchange experiences since 1947.

The Development Coordinator will be part of a small but dynamic fundraising team that raises nearly $3M annually from individuals, foundations and corporations through direct mail, online, major and planned gifts, and telemarketing programs. The Development Department is well positioned for significant revenue growth over the next several years with fundraising recognized by executive leadership and the Board of Directors as a key organizational priority.

The Department’s approach is to break down silos and work synergistically harnessing the skills and talents of each team member to be nimble as a team and responsive to each new opportunity beyond the traditional division of individual and institutional giving. While each team member has ownership of certain development functions the team works collaboratively and collegially in analyzing how to best approach and capitalize on new opportunities. Team members are expected be entrepreneurial and encouraged to take initiative. With a small staff, all team members are expected to be hands on and provide support for each other and for the team, as a whole, as deadlines arise regardless of individual area of expertise or responsibility.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage current roster of approximately 25 foundations and corporate funders and prospect for new funders; maintain grants calendar and write required reports and proposals.
  • Serve as project manager for corporate partnership and sponsorship opportunities, as assigned, which may arise, representing Development and working in collaboration with other AFS-USA departments such as Marketing and Communications.
  • Serve as national volunteer liaison between Development and local AFS-USA volunteer teams and chapters around the country to strengthen National/Local fundraising partnerships.
  • Coordinate annual reporting requirements for restricted ($10,000+) and unrestricted ($5,000) scholarships ensuring that information is gathered in a timely manner to meet reporting deadlines to donors (typically individuals and their family foundations).
  • Actively participate as part of the Department’s core fundraising unit (advancing both individual and institutional giving) with the National Director, the Deputy Director and the Administrative Officer, taking on project management of new initiatives, as well as providing a support role to other Development team members as needed (in 2012 key Department campaigns include alumni engagement pilot, implementation of legacy (planned) giving program, and expanded national scholarship program).
  • In addition to an expected self-sufficiency in ability to utilize the donor database (Raisers Edge) for day-to day responsibilities, the Development Coordinator will be expected to have strong database and computer skills to complement the abilities of the Administrative Officer, and be cross trained, as needed, on advanced Raisers Edge functions along with other technology including Convio and Global Link (AFS internal database).
  • Perform other Development Department and AFS-USA tasks and special projects, as assigned.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Required experience, knowledge and skills:
  • Knowledge and understanding of the identification, strategic analysis, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies and techniques of the moves management process in fundraising as it applies to either individual or institutional donors.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing the goals and programs of AFS-USA in grant proposals, inquiry and solicitation letters, and other communications.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of methods, practices and procedures for performing detailed prospect (institutional and individual) research and analysis utilizing online tools, and the ability to synthesize data to produce concise prospect biographical summaries and analyses.
  • Self-motivation and discipline to regularly set and achieve work goals.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and in a team setting.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of poise and professionalism in all circumstances.
  • At least a working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint expected, and excellent donor database skills required (Raisers Edge strongly preferred, and advanced skills a major plus).

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required with a minimum 2-3 years fundraising experience in a not-for-profit development office environment.
  • Position requires occasional nights and weekends, and travel, when necessary, for donor cultivation and other AFS-USA events.
