Friends of the Children
New York, New York

Friends of the Children - Vice President, Business Development

Friends of the Children is an innovative and growing nonprofit organization. Established in 1993, Friends of the Children has a simple but remarkable goal: to provide the most vulnerable children a caring, supportive, and sustained relationship with an adult role model, called a Friend. Twenty years later, a national network of five chapters with a total of 114 Friends is guiding, supporting and mentoring nearly 800 children who attend more than 150 schools throughout New York, Boston, Seattle, Portland and Klamath Falls, OR. Friends of the Children has an annual fundraising goal of $8.5 million.

The Vice President will work closely with the President of Friends of the Children, the Executive Director of the Friends of the Children New York chapter, and key board volunteers to develop relationships with major donors who will support Friends of the Children with gifts of $10,000 or more. The Vice President must understand and be able to clearly articulate the organization’s mission, vision, values and principles.

We are seeking someone who wants to work with fellow passionate professionals, successful senior executives and board members to further the mission of one of the premier youth services agencies in the United States.

Duties

  • Establish a strategic and systematic focus on closing significant commitments from high net-worth individuals. Develop, implement and sustain the organization’s major gifts programs; ensure the effective and timely cultivation and solicitation of major gifts donors and prospects.
  • Identify, cultivate, solicit and steward qualified prospects and donors; manage a portfolio of relationships.
  • Identify, evaluate and provide research on individuals to use in advancing prospective major gift donor relationships.
  • Build donor relationships, ask for gifts, and follow up to ensure long-term donor support.
  • Effectively engage board of directors and other volunteers in the fundraising process.
  • Write donor acknowledgements and proposals as needed.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to generate appointments, make the ask, and successfully close solicitations; demonstrated ability to exercise appropriate judgment and discretion while in the midst of such meetings.
  • Experience in the New York philanthropic and business communities.
  • Ability to cultivate and sustain relationships and work effectively with a wide variety of constituencies, including staff, program children, organizational supporters, current and potential donors, Board members, and community partners.
  • Ability to effectively and professionally represent the organization to a wide variety of audiences.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred.
  • Five years professional experience with progressively responsible roles in one of the following fields: non-profit fundraising, wealth management, and/or relationship-oriented sales.

Friends of the Children offers a comprehensive benefits package including employer paid medical insurance, 401(k), and generous paid time off.

Salary based on experience.
