Charleston Symphony Orchestra - Institutional Gifts Manager

We are seeking a results-oriented, highly motivated professional with corporate development, grant writing and/or sales experience, and a commitment to the highest levels of excellence.

JOB SUMMARY

The Charleston Symphony Orchestra’s Development department raises funds to cover almost 70% of the organization’s general operating budget. Donations from corporations, foundations, and the public sector is based on strategic alignment of funding interests, strong customized case materials, ongoing cultivation and stewardship. The Institutional Gifts Manager is a newly created position and will be responsible for crafting proposals for the CSO’s corporate campaigns, managing the Business Partners program appeals, researching prospective donors, ensuring proper recognition and benefits delivery, maintaining campaign calendars, and optimizing the database and other systems to support campaign goals and increase the CSO’s current level of institutional funding.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepare corporate proposals and maintain current materials about all CSO programs for use by the Director of Development, Executive Director, and CSO Board of Directors in prospecting and solicitation activity.
  • Plan and implement the corporate Business Partners program, including developing prospects, managing benefits, and completing acknowledgements.
  • Solicit Business Partners program book sponsors using strategic marketing incentives and corporate brand alignment.
  • Expand the corporate prospect portfolio and identify, research, and develop new funders.
  • Prepare prospective and current donor profiles to support effective cultivation and solicitations.
  • Schedule and prepare agendas and talking points for meetings with funders and prospective funders.
  • Organize and ensure proper corporate, foundation, and government donor crediting in all CSO recognition vehicles (brochures, ads, website, etc.).
  • Work with the Marketing and Artistic Operations departments to deliver promised benefits and develop innovative ways to provide added value to donors.
  • Optimize systems within the institutional giving area. Maintain corporate, foundation, and government donor and prospect records to ensure accuracy and maximize efficiency in communications and tracking.
  • Maintain an annual tracking calendar for all communications with corporate, foundation, government and potential funders, complying with application deadlines and reporting requirements.
  • Provide assistance for special projects and help develop case statements for new funding initiatives.
  • Maintain knowledge of local and national foundation grant opportunities, Charleston’s business environment, corporate leaders, and industry trends.
  • Ensure standardized operating procedures within position and department.
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS AND CAPABILITIES

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience and proven success working in corporate fundraising/sponsorships, grant writing, or sales, preferably with an arts or music non-profit organization.
  • Knowledge of grant and foundation development and grant reporting structures.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs, and ability to learn other software programs as needed. Previous experience working with a database is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated superior written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Experience in proposal development and basic graphic design preferred.
  • Ability to handle multiple responsibilities and meet deadlines.
  • Organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to work independently and take initiative are imperative.
  • Excellent critical thinking, strategic planning, and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple interruptions and adjustments to priorities throughout the day.
  • Must have or be able to quickly acquire knowledge of organizational structure (mission, goals and objectives), programs, policies and procedures.
  • Ability to do basic accounting and mathematical computations with a high degree of accuracy, for example to audit records of gifts and sponsorships, and organize project budgets.
  • Ability to adjust schedule as needed for support at functions, which frequently occur on evenings and weekends.
  • A passion for the art form is required.
