Design Trust for Public Space - Development Manager
The Development Manager is responsible for designing and implementing a comprehensive fundraising plan including major and annual giving, foundation and government grants, and corporate sponsorships. Reporting to and working in close partnership with the Executive Director, the Development Manager will provide leadership, support and management for foundation, corporate, and government funding as well as all restricted project funding. A newly expanded position at the organization, the Manager will play a key role in the continued growth of the Design Trust, working to diversify and grow the organization's revenue streams. S/he will also work with the Executive Director on Board relations, governance, and the implementation of the organization’s newly completed strategic plan.
Responsibilities:
I. Advance Resource Development [90%]
A. Work closely with the Executive Director to develop and implement the organization's fundraising strategy. This includes:
- Plan and execute new and existing major fundraising campaigns, including Annual Benefit, DT Council and Annual Appeal
- Develop a strategy for increasing fundraising results and resource development
- Identify prospects and develop relationships with new donors
- Arrange cultivation events with donors for Executive Director and Board
- Develop new relationships with and manage existing relationships with individuals, government agencies, foundations, and corporations
- Identify, cultivate, and solicit major individual donors
B. Coordinate all funding opportunities and grants management
- Research prospective grant and corporate support for DT projects, in consultation with the Director of Programs
- Develop grant applications to foundations and government funders
- Prepare and produce fundraising materials
- Develop and track proposals and reports to funders
- Prepare fundraising reports
C. Manage the record-keeping system
- Manage the Filemaker database
- Reconcile donor database with Quickbooks on a quarterly basis
- Maintain all donor records
- Track all communications to key constituents
- Manage and pull mailing lists; oversee development-related mailings
D. Develop and maintain annual schedule for fundraising activities
- Benefit Committee and Annual Benefit
- Annual Appeal
- Design Trust Council
E. Plan and execute Annual Benefit
- Create effective strategies to maximize return on investment and continue to grow the Benefit's profile and results
- Coordinate and support the Board's Event Committee
- Manage Benefit Committee fundraising drive, including solicitation, cultivation events
- Manage and promote ticket sales
- Maintain relationships and recruit vendor sponsorship
F. Develop and oversee the creation of all sponsorship-related materials, including marketing and sponsorship brochures, major donor collateral and the Annual Report
G. Work closely with the Executive Director to implement all development-related activities as outlined in the organization's recently adopted strategic plan
II. Foster Board of Directors Relations and Governance [10%]
A. Foster innovative thinking on current and future Board fundraising activities
Plan and execute a comprehensive Board-driven fundraising strategy, including Board giving, Board appeals to individual and corporate donors, Board-initiated major gifts, events and campaigns
- Prepare and track annual Board giving
- Conduct annual Board fundraising analysis for Board President
B. Coordinate and organize Board meetings, including scheduling, preparing, and distributing materials
- Help develop Board meeting agendas
- Prepare Board policies; maintain and update as needed
- Maintain Board records on a quarterly basis, including meeting minutes, directory and Board webpage
- Create timely and accurate meeting minutes; document outcomes and decisions for follow-up; distribute minutes to Board
- Draft and distribute Board correspondence
C. Provide support for Board governance
- Support Board President and Board committees as needed
- Create, update and maintain Board book on annual basis, or as needed
- Ensure the organization adheres to established by-laws and best practices for Board governance
- Work with Executive Director and Board President to plan for annual Board meeting
Qualifications:
- A Bachelor's degree and a minimum of five years as a development professional are required
- Knowledge of fundraising concepts, proposal writing, donor software and reporting
- Experience interacting with high level contacts, including Board members, government officials, foundation representatives, corporate and individual donors
- Demonstrated ability to create and use a clear, compelling fundraising message and story that motivates prospective donors to contribute
- Ability to create systems, track progress to goals, and communicate this information
- Self-motivated, possess high degree of initiative, can set and meet independent goals
- Able to prioritize multiple and varied responsibilities while meeting strict deadlines
- Detail-oriented with strong planning and organizational skills
- Ability to gather, synthesize, and analyze data; strategic and creative thinker
- Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office and experience with database software (Filemaker Pro). Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite is preferred.
Compensation:
