Program Officer, Credit Suisse First Boston

Credit Suisse First Boston (CSFB) is a leading global investment bank serving institutional, corporate, government and individual clients. We achieve our mission by leveraging our grant making with the Firm’s relationships and resources, the most important of which is the time, energy and talents of our employees.

The program officer position reports to the Executive Director and will occupy a key role within the CSFB Foundation serving as the primary manager of the Foundation’s grantmaking activities in the US. The person will review and research grant proposals, conduct due diligence including site visits, interact with grantees to ensure timely and effective implementation of their grants, make grant recommendations, and manage communications concerning the impact of the Foundation’s work.

Required Competencies & Skills:

  • A commitment to the mission of the CSFB Foundation which embraces the uniqueness of corporate philanthropy;
  • Highly analytical and able to assess effectiveness of a wide range of charitable organizations;
  • Experience in philanthropy (corporate, a plus) and/or nonprofit administration;
  • Ability to successfully interact with community organizations as well as employees of the firm;
  • Experience with employee volunteer programs;
  • Self-motivated and able to prioritize work with minimal direction;
  • Communications experience;
  • Sound judgment;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Strong interpersonal skills — ability to collaborate and exhibit flexibility to ensure success within team-oriented department;
  • Advanced degree in a related field is preferable, such as MA in Public Affairs, MBA or MSW;
  • Knowledge of grants management software and demonstrated skill in Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Responsibilities

Grants Management:

  • Management of the Foundation’s portfolio of NYC based grants:
    • Manages current grant relationships;
    • Conducts due diligence on potential grantees and makes recommendations as to new relationships;
    • Reviews impact of current grantees semi-annually and annually;
    • Assesses nonprofit’s effectiveness and financial condition of grantees;
  • Preparation and presentation of materials for committee and board meetings in connection with grant recommendations;
  • Coordinates philanthropic giving across CSFB branch offices in the Americas;
  • Contributes to the Foundation’s communications efforts especially in identifying impact of grants on grantee organizations;
  • Negotiates and facilitates sensitive issues in the grant making process;
  • Monitors grant making budgets and produces periodic financial reports;
  • Oversees standard terms and conditions for grant award letters, agreements and contracts;
  • Ensures compliance with IRS regulations and foundation requirements for all grants and programs.

Communications:

  • Manages Foundation’s communications activities, including weekly, monthly, and annual reporting as to Foundation’s activities;
  • Develops and implements framework for demonstrating the value of Foundation’s work to the firm and communicates impact to stakeholders.

Other:

  • Assists in the implementation of the “One Bank” initiatives;
  • Coordinates CSFB Foundation activities with firm’s other philanthropic groups;
  • Represents the Foundation at various events both within the firm and in the external community;
  • Identifies professional development and training opportunities for staff and self;
  • Undertakes special projects as assigned or initiated.
