Children and Youth

Deaths of Children by Gunfire Firearms are the second-leading cause of death among ten- to nineteen-year-olds in the United States, behind only motor vehicle accidents. In 2002, the most recent year for which national figures are available, guns killed 2,867 children and teens — one child about every three hours — of whom more 1,830 were homicide victims and 828 committed suicide. These and other statistics from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are analyzed in Protect Children, Not Guns (8 pages, PDF), from the Children's Defense Fund, whose president, Marion Wright Edelman, notes in the report that the rate of gun deaths in the U.S. is higher than in any other industrialized nation.
