Electronic Tax-Return Filing for Nonprofits
A new Web service, 990 Online, sponsored by the Urban Institute's National Center for Charitable Statistics, allows tax-exempt groups to file IRS forms 990, 990-EZ, and 8868 (request for extension) electronically for 2003 and 2004. Certified by the IRS, the system generates a PDF document of the return that can be viewed, downloaded, printed, or posted to your Web site. Nonprofits in Pennsylvania and Colorado can also file state forms electronically. Ten other states — California, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, Tennessee, and Washington — plan to offer e-filing in the future.
