Civil Society

Radio Interview With Emmett Carson In a five-minute interview with Michigan Radio host Bill Poorman, available on the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation Web site, Emmett Carson, CEO of the Minneapolis Foundation and board chair of the Council on Foundations, estimates that less than 1 percent of the country's 65,000 foundations are actively engaged in social change. Most foundations, he says, are inherently conservative and out of step with the visions of their founders, who wanted to change the world. Carson weighs in on the need to balance direct service with policy advocacy, the role of philanthropy in supporting the ideas of Martin Luther King Jr., and how difficult it actually was for King to get support for his activities based on nonviolent civil disobedience.
