Tsunami Relief

Low Risk of Epidemics After Tsunami In an interview with Doctors Without Borders, epidemiologist Dr. Philippe Guérin said the risk of epidemics in the tsunami-affected regions of South Asia is limited because diseases like cholera, dengue, or malaria already have to exist in the countries concerned. Guérin notes the chance of a cholera outbreak is very small in Thailand, Malaysia, and the Maldives, and moderate in Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Indonesia, and India. The biggest challenge, especially in the most isolated areas, is to have a system of surveillance in place so that people who become ill may be treated in a timely way to stop the spread of disease.
