Study of Law School Experience
The Law School Survey of Student Engagement questioned 13,000 students at forty-two law schools to determine how effectively the schools are contributing to learning in areas including intellectual experience, student satisfaction, and time usage. Student Engagement in Law Schools: A First Look (20 pages, PDF) found that two-thirds of students spent more than twenty hours a week preparing for class, and more than half were working harder than they thought they could to meet a faculty member's expectations. More than 80 percent were satisfied with their overall experience, and three-fourths said their institution emphasized to a considerable degree the ethical practice of law. However, 56 percent of graduating students had done no volunteer, or pro bono, work during law school. The study was conducted by Indiana University, and co-sponsored by the Association of American Law Schools and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.
