Combined Treatment and Prevention of HIV/AIDS Integrating HIV Prevention and Treatment: From Slogans to Impact (7 pages, PDF), published in the nonprofit journal of the Public Library of Science, emphasizes the importance of integrating expanded care activities with prevention efforts for long-term reductions in the number of new HIV infections and significant declines in AIDS mortality. The research, focused on sub-Saharan Africa, and directed by Joshua Salomon of the Harvard School of Public Health and Bernhard Schwartlander of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria, found that by combining HIV treatment with effective prevention efforts, the expected benefits are substantial: 29 million averted infections (55 percent) and 10 million averted deaths (27 percent) through the year 2020. Treatment can enable more effective prevention, and prevention makes treatment affordable.
