Black History Month
Black History Week was established on February 12, 1926, and expanded to Black History Month in 1976 as part of the nation's bicentennial. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, as of July 2003, African Americans represented 13.3 percent of the total U.S. population. Among blacks age 25 and over, 80 percent had at least a high school diploma, a record high; 17 percent had a bachelor's degree or higher, up 5 percent from 1993; and 1 million had an advanced degree. There were 31,400 black physicians and surgeons; 26,300 chief executives; 33,900 lawyers; about 64,800 black postsecondary teachers; 5,600 news analysts, reporters and correspondents; and 1,500 legislators.
