Revised U.S. Dietary Guidelines The 2005 revision of the U.S. Dietary Guidelines (executive summary; full document, 84 pages, PDF) is one of the largest and most detailed ever. Intended primarily for use by policy makers, healthcare providers, nutritionists, and nutrition educators, the guidelines encourage the consumption of fruits, vegetables, whole-grain foods, fat-free or low-fat milk products, and fats from sources of poly-unsaturated and mono-unsaturated fatty acids, such as fish, nuts, and vegetable oils. They also call for adult Americans to get at least sixty minutes of daily exercise to sustain weight, and ninety minutes to lose it, a recommendation that may dismay much of the population, which tends to be both sedentary and overweight.
