Seniors and the Flu Vaccine

A survey by the Harvard School of Public Health found that 51 percent of seniors and 63 percent of chronically ill adults — two groups at high risk for serious complications from influenza — did not even attempt to get the vaccine in 2004. This calls for greater education efforts on the part of health officials and healthcare providers, especially given that of those who did try to get the vaccine, 63 percent of seniors and 46 percent of adults with chronic illnesses were successful. The main reasons others were unable to get the vaccine were that it was unavailable when they tried to get it, or finding a place where it was available was difficult.
