Philanthropy and Voluntarism

Voluntarism in Thirty-Six Countries A table (1 page, PDF) prepared by the Johns Hopkins Comparative Nonprofit Sector Project compares volunteering in thirty-six countries by the number and percentage of the country's adult population that volunteer. The United States claims the most volunteers: 44.6 million people, representing 22 percent of the adult population. The country with the highest percentage of volunteers is Norway, where 1.8 million volunteers represent 52 percent of the adult population. In India, 16.5 million adults volunteer, but they represent only 2 percent of the population. The average portion of the adult population that volunteers in developed countries is 15 percent, and in developing countries, 6 percent.
