Philanthropy and Voluntarism
Philanthropic Support of Palliative Care
Transforming the Culture of Dying (72 pages, PDF) grew out of the Open Society Institute's Project on Death in America, a nine-year initiative ending December 2003 that was devoted to building the field of palliative medicine and placing improved care of the dying on the public agenda. To achieve these goals, the project funded programs in professional and public education, the arts and humanities, research, clinical care, and public policy with grants totaling $45 million. The report emphasizes the impact of private philanthropy on the development of palliative care, provides examples of strategic grantmaking, and offers recommendations to guide future funders.
