PND Connections - A Few Bad Apples? What Americans Think About Business Ethics Today
Are Americans fed up with recent corporate scandals? Do they want to see more laws on the books to punish unethical corporate behavior? And whom do they blame for the scandals? These are some of the questions explored in A Few Bad Apples? An Exploratory Look at What Typical Americans Think About Business Ethics Today (42 pages, PDF), a new report from Public Agenda. Based on a series of focus groups with average Americans, in-depth interviews with business leaders, and discussions with expert observers, the report found that business ethics did not appear to be a top-tier issue in the public's mind; that people in the focus groups tended to define ethical business practices more broadly than did business leaders; and that, with the exception of self-directed investors, most focus group participants were unfamiliar with governance structures or the details of how business practices are regulated. The report was funded by the New York City-based Kettering Foundation, a nonprofit research foundation dedicated to strengthening the role of citizens in governing themselves.
