The Lower Manhattan Development Corporation has unveiled the eight finalists in the World Trade Center Site Memorial Design Competition. A thirteen-member jury reviewed more than five thousand submissions from sixty-three nations and forty-nine states to select the designs based on their interpretations of the competition's requirements, which include delineation of the tower footprints, recognition of every individual killed in the terrorist attacks on the WTC on February 26, 1993, and September 11, 2001, and a final resting place for unidentified remains. The designs, along with animations and the competition guidelines, can be viewed online at www.WTCSiteMemorial.org. The winning design will be selected, by year's end if everything proceeds according to plan, by a jury that includes artists and architects, a family member of one of the victims, a Lower Manhattan resident and business owner, representatives of state and city agencies, and arts and cultural professionals.
