According to a recently published issue brief from America's Second Harvest, fully one-third of households that use charitable food pantries include at least one senior citizen. America's Second Harvest itself provides emergency food to more than 2.5 million Americans who are sixty-five or older, or about 20 percent of its clients. In addition to statistics, the organization's brief (4 pages, PDF) presents the perspective of individuals who need food assistance, discusses the experiences of elderly people in rural communities, and offers several recommendations to improve the situation. Produced with a grant from the Sara Lee Foundation, the brief is one of a series of quarterly papers on hunger issues published by America's Second Harvest.
