Philanthropy and Voluntarism

The Fall 2003 issue of Responsive Philanthropy (20 pages, PDF), the quarterly journal of the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy, features a cover story on funding for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender organizations and causes. "Equality's Frontier: Funding an End to Discrimination Based on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity," by Allison McGee Johnson, senior communications manager at the Gill Foundation, tracks the growing public support for equal rights for LGBT Americans and explores the challenges to equality for those individuals in the areas of employment, housing, marriage, parenting, and partner benefits. The article also examines the need for financial support for equal rights; charts the revenues and expenses of the nation's largest LGBT organizations; and discusses the work of groups such as Funders for Lesbian and Gay Issues, the Pride Foundation, and the Gill Foundation.
