PND Connections - District Implementation of No Child Left Behind

The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 aims to improve student achievement by requiring schools to set tangible goals and figure out ways to measure their progress toward those goals. While state governments are in charge of establishing compliance plans, school districts across the country will ultimately determine the success of the legislation. To explore how districts are dealing with the legislation, nonprofit research organization WestEd interviewed school district staff, examined documentation from districts across the country, and convened a group of district leaders to share their experiences. District Implementation of No Child Left Behind (4 pages, PDF), an article in the recent edition of the organization's publication Policy Notes, presents the results of that research, identifies several concerns voiced by those charged with implementing the legislation, and offers successful strategies and recommendations to school administrators, state legislators, and policy makers.
