PND Connections - Carnegie Results

A Nation at Risk, the disturbing 1983 report issued by the National Commission on Excellence in Education, cautioned that the poor quality of American education threatened the nation's position as a global leader in industry, science, and technology and outlined a set of urgent recommendations for educational reform centered around curriculum, standards, leadership, fiscal support, and teaching. The Carnegie Corporation of New York reacted to the report by stepping up its own work in education reform; convening education professionals, government officials, and other leaders to discuss education issues; and supporting initiatives to improve teacher quality. The latest issue of Carnegie Results, a quarterly publication of the Corporation, considers some of the measures taken over the last twenty years to achieve those goals — including the Corporation's role in establishing the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards, the National Center on Education and the Economy, and the National Commission on Teaching and America's Future — and concludes that while much has been achieved, much more remains to be done.
