Philanthropy and Voluntarism

PND Connections - At Issue: Voluntary or Compensatory Boards - Which Is the Better Policy?

The debate over whether to compensate foundation board members and trustees has moved into the public eye this summer: Supporters of compensation argue that it's appropriate for directors and trustees to be paid for their time and expertise, while critics of the practice believe they should serve on boards voluntarily. The Council on Foundations takes up the issue in one of its occasional board briefing papers, At Issue: Voluntary or Compensatory Boards — Which Is the Better Policy? (7 pages, PDF), to help foundations better examine their current policies. The paper reviews the basic legalities of compensation, discusses the pros and cons of both options, and provides a sampling of the most common practices among foundations.
