Looking for new ways to raise revenue, many nonprofits have been turning to for-profit business ventures, cause-related marketing partnerships, and licensing agreements to help support their nonprofit services. To document the growth of business activity in the nonprofit sector, the Social Enterprise Alliance and consulting firm Community Wealth Ventures have created an online database of social enterprises that is searchable by name, keyword, organization type, venture type, budget, and state. The Directory of Social Enterprises provides a wealth of information and contacts for organizations starting new ventures or expanding existing enterprises. In addition, foundation executives and other nonprofit leaders can mine the database for outstanding efforts in social enterprise and share best practices with other nonprofits.
