Blended Learning in Practice: Case Studies From Leading Schools: KIPP Empower Academy Combining small group instruction and online learning can help young students stay focused and progress more quickly through the curriculum, a report from FSG and the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation finds. The first in a series of five case studies that look at the integration of technology into classroom instruction at charter schools, Blended Learning in Practice: Case Studies From Leading Schools: KIPP Empower Academy (41 pages, PDF) describes the instructional, operational, and financial dimensions of a blended rotational model that includes teacher-led instruction, small group or self-paced work, and online learning. According to the report, teachers find that small group instruction — and, to a lesser degree, online data — enable them to target content that is more specific to each student's needs; adjust the pace of instruction to the needs of individual students; and offer assistance more promptly to students who may be struggling with the material. Lessons learned include the need for user-friendly interfaces, better data integration, and additional time to address technology issues.
