Digital Training Comes of Age
Journalists lucky enough to have a job want more training in the use of digital tools and technologies, a report from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation finds. Based on a survey of journalists who received training in the past two years at Knight-funded journalism fellowship programs, Digital Training Comes of Age (50 pages, PDF) found that lack of training is the biggest source of job dissatisfaction in the journalism field, followed closely by compensation and job security. The report also found that roughly 75 percent of U.S.-based fellows who received training through a journalism program and 85 percent of international fellows said they would benefit greatly or very greatly from additional training — with a focus on multimedia, data analysis, and technology training. The survey also found that while nearly 95 percent of Knight-trained journalists say their news organizations "must become learning organizations and establish a culture of experimentation and adaptation to survive in the digital age," fewer than six in ten see that happening.
