PND Connections - Ocean Protection

Currently, less than 1 percent of the Pacific Ocean is protected from overfishing and pollution. In an effort to address the situation, marine conservation group SeaWeb and the Ocean Wilderness Network have launched Less Than One, a public awareness campaign designed to improve ocean protection along the Pacific coast of the U.S. by establishing reserves where extractive activities such as fishing would be prohibited. OWN members participating in the initiative include the Ocean Conservancy, the Surfrider Foundation, and the World Wildlife Fund. In another effort to promote awareness about ocean pollution, Oceana, a nonprofit conservation group, has teamed with environmental group Earth 911 to offer pollution alerts — via e-mail, cellphone, or PDA — for beaches in eleven states along the Pacific, Atlantic, and Gulf coasts, as well as the Great Lakes. To sign up for the alerts, visit the Oceana Web site.
