A Citizen's Solutions Guide: The Federal Budget
Fiscal policy is not just the purview of politicians and bankers; all citizens have a role to play in deciding our fiscal priorities as a nation, especially in an election year, a new publication from Public Agenda argues. A Citizen's Solutions Guide: The Federal Budget (8 pages, PDF) explains the basic elements of the fiscal debate currently raging in the halls of Congress and lays out three approaches to improving the nation's fiscal outlook, with arguments for and against each: making long-term investments in infrastructure to spur economic growth and raising revenue to cover the cost of those investments; focusing on making Social Security and Medicare sustainable over the long term; and keeping taxes low while reducing the size of the government. A list of resources about the federal budget and policy options for addressing the many issues around it is included.
