Minorities
Design, Outcomes, and Lessons Learned From the Urban Institute Academy for Public Policy Analysis and Research Pilot Program
Strong and supportive mentoring and peer networks are critical to minority students' success and perseverance in adding their voices to the public policy research arena, a report from the Urban Institute finds. Design, Outcomes, and Lessons Learned From the Urban Institute Academy for Public Policy Analysis and Research Pilot Program (36 pages, PDF) describes the development, design, and outcomes of a year-long program designed to provide promising minority college students with the knowledge, skills, and networks needed to obtain graduate degrees and launch careers in public policy. Funded by the Brookings Institution's Diversity Initiative, the report also emphasizes the need for year-round mentoring support, consideration for the non-academic challenges that students from disadvantaged communities face, institutional commitment and funding, and partnerships with think tanks and universities.
