Philanthropy and Voluntarism

A Foundation-to-Foundation Partnership: Lessons From a Unique Pairing of Funders In addition to a shared vision and values, similar approaches to grantmaking, and a coherent idea of each partner's role, a successful partnership involving funders requires a clear theory of change, a report from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation argues. A Foundation-to-Foundation Partnership: Lessons From a Unique Pairing of Funders (34 pages, PDF) describes how RWJF and the Northwest Health Foundation came together to create Partners Investing in Nursing's Future, an initiative to engage local foundations and nursing organizations in advancing the nursing profession in their communities. Among other things, the report looks at how the two partners handled differences in organizational culture and defined their respective roles and responsibilities, and highlights key lessons learned, including the importance of experienced and dedicated program staff, allowing sufficient time for establishing clear goals and expectations, and having an up-front understanding of the power issues that affect program design, strategy, and implementation.
