Earlier this year, when New Jersey governor James E. McGreevey proposed eliminating the state's arts funding, advocacy group ArtPride New Jersey immediately began working to save state support for community theaters, orchestras, museums, dance troupes, film festivals, and other arts groups and artists. The organization held public rallies in support of the arts, launched e-mail campaigns to reach the governor and state legislators, and publicized data showing economic activity generated by New Jersey arts exceeds $1 billion. It also set up a crisis room on its Web site with advocacy resources such as talking points and a sample petition, as well as explanations of proposals like the hotel/motel occupancy tax to raise funds for state arts and culture agencies.
