PND Connections - National History Day

Rather than just memorizing dates and names, more than half a million students spent time in history class this year producing dramatic performances, imaginative exhibits, multimedia documentaries, and research papers for National History Day. Sponsored by the History Channel, National History Day is a yearlong education program that engages students in grades six through twelve in the excitement of historical inquiry and the interpretation of historical topics. Students design and create history projects based on an annual theme and enter them in local competitions. This year, more than 2,100 young historians with projects on the theme "Rights and Responsibilities in History" advanced to the 2003 national contest, held in June at the University of Maryland. The students presented their projects at the Smithsonian Museum of American History, the White House Visitor Center, the City Museum of Washington, D.C., and the National Museum of Health and Medicine.
