The Income Divide in Health Care: How the Affordable Care Act Will Help Restore Fairness to the U.S. Health System
Among low- and moderate-income families, 57 percent and 36 percent of adults, respectively, were uninsured at some point in 2011, while 41 percent and 23 percent were uninsured for at least a year, a new report from the Commonwealth Fund finds. According to The Income Divide in Health Care: How the Affordable Care Act Will Help Restore Fairness to the U.S. Health System, uninsured low- and moderate-income adults were more likely than others to lack a regular source of health care and to rely on emergency rooms for non-urgent care. The report argues that by supporting near-universal coverage through Medicaid expansion, premium subsidies for state insurance exchanges, and new rules preventing insurers from denying coverage or charging higher premiums due to preexisting health conditions, the 2010 Affordable Care Act will narrow the income-related inequities in the current system and do a better job of providing equal access to needed care.
