Jumping Beyond the Broom: Why Black Gay and Transgender Americans Need More Than Marriage Equality
Despite some progress in achieving marriage equality and other protections for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people, LGBTQ African Americans continue to be marginalized by structural biases based on race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, sex, gender identity, and sexual orientation, a report from the Center for American Progress argues. As a result, write the authors of Jumping Beyond the Broom: Why Black Gay and Transgender Americans Need More Than Marriage Equality (56 pages, PDF), LGBTQ African Americans are more likely than their white LGBTQ and straight African-American peers to experience economic insecurity, low educational attainment, and disparities in health and wellness. Moreover, they continue to be underserved by the policy priorities of the LGBTQ rights movement, the report suggests, as well as by racial justice priorities that overlook LGBTQ constituencies. Funded by the Arcus Foundation, the report calls for a policy agenda that addresses the structural inequities that perpetuate negative economic, educational, health, and other outcomes among LGBTQ African Americans.
