Children and Youth

PND - KIDS COUNT 2003 The Annie E. Casey Foundation has published its fourteenth annual KIDS COUNT Data Book, which analyzes child well-being on a national scale as well as on a state-by-state basis. The data are available in an online database that allows Web users to generate custom graphs, maps, ranked lists, and state-by-state profiles. Visitors to the KIDS COUNT site can also read the book online, view its sections as PDF files, download the entire data set as text files, or order a hard copy. In addition to the statistics, the book features an essay, The High Cost of Being Poor: Another Perspective on Helping Low-Income Families Get By and Get Ahead (24 pages, PDF), which explains how low-income working families are struggling to reach financial security because they pay more for necessities such as housing, food, and transportation. KIDS COUNT 2003 also advocates several low-cost approaches to the problems facing low-income families and provides examples of public and private initiatives that are addressing their obstacles.
