Influencing Public Policy in the Digital Age: The Law of Online Lobbying and Election-Related Activities The digital communication technologies that are changing how we share and consume information have also resulted in laws and regulations that affect how nonprofits communicate and advocate online, a report from the Alliance for Justice finds. Influencing Public Policy in the Digital Age: The Law of Online Lobbying and Election-Related Activities (34 pages, PDF) offers guidance on what is permissible for 501(c)(3), (c)(4), and 527 organizations in terms of their use of social media under Internal Revenue Service regulations, Federal Election Commission restrictions, and state laws governing fundraising and advocacy activity. Funded by the Ford, MacArthur, Marguerite Casey, Public Welfare, and Moore foundations, the report argues that active participation in the democratic process is not only possible within the law, but further enhanced by new technologies.
