A Track Record of Success
A well-designed high-speed passenger rail system would significantly reduce short-haul air travel and inter-city driving, create jobs, save energy, protect the environment, and encourage sustainable land use and development, a new report from the U.S. PIRG Education Fund argues. The Rockefeller Foundation-funded report, A Track Record of Success: High-Speed Rail Around the World and Its Promise for America (53 pages, PDF), examines the economic and transportation benefits of high-speed rail in Japan and Europe, where such systems have been operating for decades; considers its costs, safety, and reliability; and highlights considerations for designing and implementing a high-speed rail system in the U.S. Recommendations include building stations in city centers and planning for intensive commercial and residential development in the area; pairing high-speed rail with expansion of local transit networks; and investing in energy-efficient equipment and powering the system with renewable energy wherever possible.
