Trends in College Pricing 2010
While college tuitions and fees continue to climb, average net costs for full-time students — including room and board and after accounting for grant aid and tax benefits — have held steady over the last five years, a new report from the College Board finds. Based on an annual analysis of published tuition and fees, room and board, and institutional finances, the report, Trends in College Pricing 2010 (32 pages, PDF), estimates that, for the 2010-11 academic year, tuition and fees at public four-year institutions rose an average of 7.9 percent, to $7,605, for in-state students and 6.0 percent, to $19,595, for out-of-state students, while tuition and fees at private nonprofit four-year institutions rose an average of 4.5 percent, to $27,293. The report also found that inflation-adjusted tuition increases over the last decade averaged 5.6 percent a year at public four-year colleges and universities — well above the 3 percent increase at private institutions and outpacing the 4.2 percent and 3.3 percent increases in the 1980s and 1990s, respectively. According to the report, grant aid and tax benefits should bring average net costs in 2010-11 to $10,080 at public institutions and $21,020 at private institutions, due largely to an unprecedented increase in the federal Pell grant program for low- and moderate-income students and veteran's benefits.
