Philanthropy and Voluntarism

PND Connections - Comparative Nonprofit Sector Project, Johns Hopkins University

The Comparative Nonprofit Sector Project at Johns Hopkins University has found that the world's nonprofit organizations spend approximately $1.3 trillion annually and employ the equivalent of nearly 40 million full-time workers, including volunteers. Launched in 1990, the project analyzes the scope, size, composition, and financing of the civil society sector; provides data on nonprofit employment, volunteering, expenditures, and revenues; and examines geographic patterns. This year the project has broadened its research to encompass thirteen countries in Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia, in addition to the twenty-two countries it has previously covered in Europe, Asia, Latin America, and North America. Comparative data tables for all thirty-five countries and an abstract (1 page, PDF) of Global Civil Society: An Overview are available online; the full report can be ordered from the university's Center for Civil Society Studies.
