Public Attitudes Towards and Experiences With Workplace Safety
A new report from the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago analyzes dozens of NORC surveys and polls to gauge Americans' experiences with and opinions about workplace safety issues. Funded by the Public Welfare Foundation, the report, Public Attitudes Towards and Experiences With Workplace Safety (33 pages, PDF), finds that 85 percent of U.S. workers rank workplace safety first in importance among labor standards, ahead of family and maternity leave, minimum wage, paid sick days, overtime pay, and the right to join a union. Despite widespread concern about the issue, however, the media and general public tend to pay closest attention to safety issues when disastrous workplace accidents occur. The report also found that most workers said they were satisfied with safety conditions at their place of work, although they also reported significant levels of job-related stress, which is a contributing factor to injury.
